As you may remember from last year, we have a great relationship with our sponsor FPV Australia, who not only provided us with a DJI Mavic Pro drone, but also put Paul through his training to attain his Remote Pilot Licence (RePL). No longer a recreational flyer, Paul now has the skills as a commercial pilot to fly a drone/UAV/RPA according to the laws regulated by CASA.
It was amazing to recently have Total RPA offer to assist Paul through the complex process to attain his RPA Operator’s Certificate (ReOC) through CASA. Paul is the guru of this couple when it comes to all things “drone”, but even Kirstine understood how awesome this is. It is hard work preparing documents which will be submitted to CASA, and involves several technical manuals and documents explaining how Paul intends to:
- Operate a drone business, including;
- Administering staff
- Keeping records
- Maintaining currency and competency of staff (pilots and crew)
- Remaining compliant with rules and regulations
- Assessing and managing risk
- Maintenance procedures
- Handling dangerous goods
- Drug and alcohol management plans
Paul’s career means he has lots of experience with writing risk management strategies and policies, so he is up for the challenge!
How does this benefit Driving Oz with the Black Dog? Once Paul has his ReOC, it is a game changer for flying his drone. It means we can fly under conditions that recreational flyers can’t. What does this mean? Flying at night time. Flying in National Parks, with the appropriate permits and insurance. It means we can use our drone footage commercially, necessary for us to use our drone images in our documentary and book.
This sounds like a lot of paperwork to have to travel with, doesn’t it? Guess what?! There is no need to contribute to deforestation to maintain records.
AVCRM is a PAPERLESS management system, the world’s first user customisable, complete Aviation Compliance & Risk Management Software Solution. For this reason, having AVCRM on board as a new sponsor is also a blessing. They have provided us with a year’s subscription to their full RPA Manager program, and even joined Paul on Skype to walk him through the software’s functionality. Paul can now keep electronic records of policies, procedures, logbooks, airspace maps, planned flights, staff qualifications, maintenance, inventory, weather checks .. the list goes on!
So, no matter where we are in Australia, thanks to FPV Australia, Total RPA & AVCRM, Paul will have his finger on the pulse of the drone world, and we will be able to maximise the opportunities available to us in flying his DJI Mavic Pro, or any other drone he can get his hands on!
